bullet.gif The name "Maltese" has been known all over the world for over 3,00 years. This name was applied to a small dog, the favorite of ladies before the Greek and Roman Empires. No one is sure why it was first applied to this breed.

bullet.gifThe Maltese is called "Ye Ancient Dog of Malta". The breed did derive its name from the Island of Malta, but that being the only fact, the origin of this breed is relatively unknown. There is no evidence to suggest that the Maltese is indigenous to the Island of Malta.

bullet.gifThe first known representation of a Maltese-Type dog is dated 600-300 BC it was unearthed in a dig at Fayum, Egypt near Cairo. During this time there was documentation that a small "lap" or ladies' dogs existed through out the Mediterranean area. bullet.gifMaltese were very attractive to the ladies of the 17th and 18th centuries and were worn in their sleeves or pockets as fashion accessories. In 1888 the Maltese was first registered with the AKC and was registered as a Maltese Terrier, the Terrier was dropped off the name prior to 1928 due to the fact that they have proven that the Maltese are of Spaniel descent.
